"notes": "Windy Mountain, Op. 1\nMusic Composed, Arranged, and Orchestrated by Josh Barron\nMusic Performed by The ETHEReal String Orchestra\nMixed and Mastered by Andrew Steffen\nAlbum Artwork and Design by Josh Barron\n- Album Description-\nCommissioned by the Iowa City Community String Orchestra, this 14 minute composition depicts the story of a baby bird yearning for the world beyond his mother and the nest. After leaving on his own, he quickly discovers how hard it is. A coming of age tale, told through a string orchestra, Windy Mountain touches on hardship, bravery, and tenderness.\n-Special Thanks-\nJosh would first like to thank the Iowa City Community String Orchestra along with orchestra director Carey Bostian for providing this once in a lifetime opportunity. Additionally, Josh would like to thank ETHEReal String Orchestra (Andrew Steffen and Andrew Stern), as well as all of his friends, family, colleagues, and supporters. Lastly, thanks goes to Josh's band directors Craig Blume, Tim Miller, and David Pallada for instilling him a love for music and composition.\n-Liner Notes-\n\"Picture it. Royal Center, Indiana, circa 2016. I had just finished promoting my first album release ETHEReal String Project and my friend and collaborator for that album, Andrew Steffen, said that he is good friends with someone who wanted to commission me to write a concert work. The assignment was pretty straightforward and all Andrew said was (horribly paraphrasing here), \"Just do your best, you'll be fine! Just don't screw it up.\". Up until this point, I had never written a single composition for a string orchestra of this size, as in a multi-movement, coherent work. At the time, I was really into the music of Everybody's Gone to the Rapture by Jessica Curry which led me to discover the work of British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. When I listened to The Lark Ascending, I was brought to my knees by the beauty of it. The violin quite literally sounded like a bird in flight over the British countryside. That sense of authenticity to create such an organic depiction of the scene inspired me. I came up with three themes that tie the whole composition together: the flying theme, the mother bird theme, and the mountain itself. Once I had established this, I treated it like a short film starting with the mountain showing through a misty pass and the camera zooming in to the little bird and its mother proper. Then I introduce various iterations of those themes throughout to depict the bird's attempt to leave the nest, getting lost in a thunderstorm, and even getting struck by lightning! To wrap the composition up, I reprised some of the themes into a short end credits. The whole time I wrote this, I felt like I was hanging by the seat of my pants, but I am glad the work was well received by the audience at the concert and I hope that this studio version will be just as positively received.\"\n-Josh Barron, 2025",
